A dayro is an all-night gathering of Gujarati folk literature — sung verse, spoken stories and devotional song, passed between artists and an audience that answers back. Hareshdan Gadhvi, also credited as Hareshdan Suru, is a lok sahityakar of that stage: singer and vakta, storyteller.

I · The gathering

A voice among the dayro circle

His performances are built for the dayro: a harmonium and tabla behind him, fellow artists beside him, and an audience seated close. One evening can move from a Mataji stuti to a story of a warrior, to a line of duha that the crowd repeats.

He has kept an official YouTube channel since 2016, describing it simply as the channel of Loksahityakar Hareshdan Gadhvi, and added a second official channel in 2019.

II · The metre

Duha, chhand, sapakharu

At the centre of his repertoire is charani sahitya, the old poetic tradition of Gujarat and Rajasthan, with its tight metres: the two-line duha, the galloping chhand and the sapakharu, a fast, dense form made to be recited at full breath.

A 2018 compilation, Chhand Sapakhara — Best Collection of Duha Chhand, gathers that side of his work. The same year he recorded a series of Shiva stutis with Jitudaan Gadhvi — Aadi Shiv Omkar, Bam Bam Damru Baaj, Jay Jay Jag Vandan — and the Rudrashtak.

III · Valour

Songs of Mewar and of the nation

Stories of courage run through his catalogue. Mevad Na Mobhi, his shauryagatha of Maharana Pratap, is the most-watched video on his channel. The Maharana returns in dayro talks like Rano To Rano Hato and Juke E Rano Nahi.

Closer to home he recited Loh Purush Sardar, a poem on Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel by Kavishri Diljitbhai Gadhvi, and took the stage in Surat for a Rashtra Katha with Jitudaan Gadhvi.

IV · Devotion

Stutis for the Mother Goddess

Devotion is the other half of the night. He sings for the kuldevi and for Mataji: Ath Shree Deviyan's invocation, songs for Sonbai Ma, Jwaladevi Ki Stuti (2022, with Himanshu Gadhvi) and the 2024 singles Jay Jay Rupal Maat and Biraje Bavliyo Bagdanadham.

In 2025 he released a Shree Hanuman Chalisa, composed by Himanshu Gadhavi and Harsh Patel.

V · The road

From Rajula to Rajkot, and to the Ram Katha

His videos trace a working life on the road: dayro nights in Rajula, Rajkot, Surat, Vatva, Rupal Dham in Rampara, Lilakha and Wankaner, filmed by regional studios such as Studio Bansidhar and VP Digital Studio.

He has also recited lok sahitya and sapakhara at Morari Bapu's Ram Katha in Chotila, and posted chopai from a Ram Katha yatra in the UK.
